Our Sierra Leone Staff

Momodu Bangura: CAUSE Kids Program Manager

Mr. Bangura has been working faithfully for CAUSE Canada since 2004.  He has over 30 years of experience working in community development and we are fortunate to have him on our team.  In addition to his extensive experience, Mr. Bangura holds both a G.C.E. “O” Level Certificate and a Higher Teacher’s Certificate for Secondary Division 1.  He is also currently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts in Peace, Democracy and Development Studies.

Mr. Bangura’s role at CAUSE Canada is to plan, implement, supervise and monitor CAUSE Kids activities.  One of his primary responsibilities is to oversee the sponsored schools in the Koinadugu district.  Mr. Bangura is therefore involved in the provision of school facilities, learning materials, feeding programs and medical care to students in these schools.  In all of these activities, Mr. Bangura acts as a liaison between the CAUSE Kids Sierra Leone office and the head office in Canada.  He is also responsible for reporting all of his activities on a monthly basis to the authorities in Freetown and Canada.

Mr. Bangura’s passion is to contribute to the holistic development of the Sierra Leonean child.  Through his work, he wants to raise the standard of education in Sierra Leone.  His hope for the CAUSE Kids sponsorship program is that ultimately, the citizens of Sierra Leone will rise to the challenge and sponsor all the children of this country to receive a quality education.

Alie Mark Bangura: Agricultural Officer

Mr. Alie Bangura has been working in the field of Agriculture in Sierra Leone for over fifteen years.  He joined the CAUSE Canada team as the Agriculture Officer in 2008 and his expertise is much appreciated.  In addition to his extensive field experience, Mr. Bangura has a Diploma in Agriculture General from the National Agricultural Training Center at Njala University College in Freetown.

As the Agricultural Officer, Mr. Bangura prepares the budget for CAUSE Canada’s agricultural programs and purchases quality farming inputs such as tools and seeds.  He distributes these to CAUSE Kids schools and keeps an inventory of all the agricultural items handed over into their care.  Mr. Bangura is also responsible for the implementing, monitoring and evaluating of farming activities.  He ensures that the plowing oxen in CAUSE Communities are properly used and cared for.   He also makes sure that the harvests from the school gardens are distributed appropriately.   Finally, he reports on all of his activities to the CAUSE Kids Coordinator.

Mr. Bangura first joined CAUSE because it provided him with a reliable income for supporting his family.  In the future, he wants to continue simultaneously promoting the virtues of education and agriculture. His vision is to always work towards making communities sustainable; allowing them to meet their daily needs while planning for the needs of the future generation.

Karawa K. Konteh: CAUSE Kids Program Monitor

Karawa joined CAUSE Kids as the Sponsorship Coordinator in 2010.  He is a qualified teacher with his Higher Teacher’s Certificate, specializing in Secondary Social Studies and Economics.  He chose to join the CAUSE team because he wanted to engage in development and help Sierra Leonean children to negotiate a rapidly changing world.  He also appreciates CAUSE Canada’s efforts to empower and educate women.

At CAUSE Kids, Karawa is responsible for improving the accountability of the sponsorship program.  He works to increase program support for the sponsored schools in the Koinadugu district.  He also visits sponsor students and their families in their homes and ensure that everyone understands the basic principles of the child Sponsorship program.  Furthermore, Kawara monitors the health of sponsored students and ensures that they have access to medical care when they fall ill.

Committed to the vision of alleviating poverty, Karawa hopes to someday be a philanthropist and use his resources to promote a better standard of living for children in Sierra Leone.

Rugitu Tarawalie: CAUSE Kids Program Monitor

Rugiatu (or Rugi) has her Diploma in Business Administration and she joined CAUSE as a Monitoring Coordinator in 2009.  One of the reasons she joined CAUSE Canada is that she saw them working very hard to see every child reach his or her educational goals.  Since Rugi really enjoys working with children, she fits in very well at CAUSE Kids.

On a weekly basis Rugi is busy monitoring CAUSE Kids Schools and doing home visits to the families of CAUSE sponsor kids.  Through these activities, Rugi can identify any difficulties that kids are having in school and work with families to resolve these problems.   She can also monitor their health and ensure they get medical treatment when it is needed.  Furthermore, through the home visits Rugi can sensitize parents to the importance of education and encourage them to continue sending their kids to school.

In the future Rugi sees herself continuing to work with children and especially young girls.  More specifically, she hopes to work with CAUSE to improve girl child education in Sierra Leone.

Mariama Jalloh: CAUSE Kids Program Monitor

Mariama joined the CAUSE Canada team in 2009.  She holds a diploma in Accounting and Finance, which has prepared her for her various administrative duties with CAUSE Kids.  Mariama also spends lots of time working with students in the field.   One of the reasons that she joined the CAUSE Kids team was that she had always wanted to work with children.

At CAUSE Kids, Mariama’s role is to help with all the administrative and financial activities for the program.  In addition, she monitors the CAUSE Kids partner schools and helps to coordinate between the sponsored children and their Canadian sponsors.  Along with the rest of the CAUSE team, she also monitors student health and ensures that those who need medical care receive it.

One of Mariama’s career goals is to continue with her education, taking courses that will build her capacity and help her to do her job more effectively.  In the future she would like to continue working with and helping underprivileged children in Sierra Leone.

Augusta Nuwoma: CAUSE Kids Program Monitor

Augusta was a new addition to the CAUSE Canada team in 2010.  She has a diploma in Development Studies and is currently on course to receive her BSc in the same.  She has also completed both her West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Exams and her Basic Education Certificate Exams.

As the Peer Literacy Coordinator, Augusta’s responsibilities at CAUSE Kids include monitoring, supervising and giving guidance to the peer literacy facilitators in order to make the program both successful and sustainable.  She is also responsible for developing and adjusting the peer literacy curriculum.  Augusta meets with the peer literacy facilitators on a weekly basis to monitor their classes in the schools and offer them computer classes as part of the incentive for their work.

One of the reasons that August decided to join the CAUSE Canada team was that she wanted to work for the common good of all. To her, that is the meaning of development. In the future, she hopes to expand the Peer Literacy program to all CAUSE Kids schools, thereby creating employment opportunities for secondary school girls.

Francess Tarawalie: CAUSE Kids Program Monitor

A mother of two and an inspiring group leader, Frances joined the CAUSE Kids team in 2012 when her husband was transfered to Kabala to be the head of police. Francess has a BSc in Nutrition and is working to improve nutrition levels in the CAUSE Kids schools.

Mohamed Sillah: CAUSE Kids Casual Guard and Office Assistant

Mohamed is a trained and qualified carpenter.  He joined the CAUSE Canada team as an office guard in 2009.  At the CAUSE Kids office, Mohamed ensures the security of all CAUSE property.  He is also responsible for cleaning the office and compound and running occasional errands for CAUSE Kids staff.  Mohamed has also proven willing and available to do any additional jobs that may come up.  For example, he was recently involved in a project to train members of the Student Governments how to repair school furniture.

One reason that Mohamed chooses to work with CAUSE Kids is that he feels it is one of the best ways for him to help in the eradication of poverty and illiteracy in Sierra Leone.  In the future, one of Mohamed’s goals is to take adult literacy classes himself.
